Stonyridge Larose 2004, Waiheke Island

From the pioneer of Waiheke wines this 2004 vintage is drinking beautifully now or will age for the next 5 years or so. The nose on this wine is very European in character. It's not just your typical new world Bordeaux blend but has great expression from dark fruit to something a little more interesting. The layered nose is an indication that this is a serious wine, the mineral, fruit, earth aromas lead from nose to palate perfectly. This wine is the archetypal Bordeaux blend from NZ.

Although these wines are said to age 20 years I would have to say with the approachable nature of this wine it'll last for the next 5+.

92 Points RRP $180

Churton New Release Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir

"Central otago did I hear you say?"

Well them you'd better get off at the next station, as this train is Marlborough bound, but not the marlborough you've been reading and drinking, no this is destination atypical Marlborough.
21st June is Winter solstice and a root day in biodynamic calendar, to which Churton adhere to, but is hard to distinguish whether or not these practices work, but that's for another time.

The event was hosted by winemaker and winery owner, Sam Weaver, at Mollies in Auckland.

The vineyard is close planted with approx. 5000 vines/Ha.
The first vines were planted 11years ago, and they have finally finished planting this year.

100% biodynamic for last 2 and a half years, although Sam is not keen on prep 501 (This is finely ground quartz crystals specially prepared. The crystal should be of good quality and shape and clear. It is buried in a similar manner to Preparation BD500, but this time it is buried in the cow's horn during the hot time)

The wines were as followed!

Churton 2009 Sauvignon blanc, 5,500 cases

30% bought in fruit. Majority of fruit from own vineyard, 17 % clay soil

Bone dry, 30% handpicked fruit, passion fruit mixed with hay, guava with lime infused nose.

Creamy smooth acid that's not over powering with racy lemon zest and tight mineral aspect not present in many Sauvignon from the new world.

89 Points

Churton 2008 Pinot noir

100% estate grown fruit

2008 provided good flowering, Churton's yields are small giving approx. 6 tons/hectare or 45 hectoliter/hectare

The wine has bright velvet cherry with some very attractive barnyard, chalky blackberry with kaffir lime leaf characters on the nose.

Chalky cherry/red fruit, with very sour cherry with bramble green character with a bit of heat at the end, very youthful. Not for the central otago drinker

90 Points

Churton 2003 waihope slopes Pinot noir

Bread and yeast new car smell with cherry and red summer fruit.

Earth but full fruited still youthful despite age, goes to show that Marlborough Pinot can go the length.

87 Points

Churton 2008 abyss Pinot noir

Only 140 cases were made of this wine.

First block planted with the best aspect, warmest part of the vineyard, north west planted rows about 2 Ha in size.

Very sweet plum, hint of honey, and good varietal characters on the nose.

soy and bitter sweet cherry on the palate, blackberry and plum fruit with good depth of character with rich currants. Very smooth tannin structure with fine acid.

90 Points

Churton 2003 Sauvignon blanc

2003 was the catalyst year for most wineries when they decided to change from cork to screwcap, as the corks were very bad in that year.

Very green pea and asparagus with salty prosciutto nose.

Melon on the palate with restrained acid. This wine is not for those wanting fresh sweet tropical fruit Sauvignon Blanc but does indicate that New Zealand is making Sauvignon Blanc that can age gracefully.

Adrian's Birthday Tasting

Not your everyday tasting some may say, but this was a great way for the wines to be served and there was a them that ran the course of the wines that was revealed at the end.
Heavily French influenced, all the wines were rated top in the vintage for each region by Robert Parker, but my scores were poles apart from his. Although his scores were tasted at time of bottling or before mine were 4 -14 years after, he's the expert not me!

Wine tasting at Dida's Wine and food store in Auckland, Thursday 17th June.
All wines were tasted blind and served courtesy of Adrian Kitto.

Wine 1

1988 Marc bredif vouvray grande annee, France

Candied lemon peel, clove, lime very youthful nose.
Candied citrus fruit palate with smooth integration of fruit, acid and hint of oak. Balanced beautifully.

93 points rrp $65

Wine 2

La collina bilancia 2002, New Zealand

I didn't pick this wine as New World at all, the character is very new Rhone Valley.
Strawberry cherry and raspberry cedar lindseed oil, sunflower seed on the nose.
Bright but dark fruit soft tannin smooth

Vertical of Le Sol Syrah on the beach

2008
Lifted violets, liquorice mixed with blueberry and tar on the nose.
Bright red fruit, strawberries and cloves, slightly grippy velvet like tannins made this youthful wine enjoyable now but has superb potential.
94 points

2007
The vintage was deemed a classic with perfect fruit ripening conditions favourable for making great wine in Hawe's Bay.
More aromatics than the 08 with violets and floral notes dancing in harmony with the blackberry and bramble characters on the nose.
The palate weight and structure were delightful with generous blackfruit and quince paste and fine chalky tannin.
92 points

2006
The 2006 was a tricky year for hawke's Bay wines, but never the less this wine was classic New Zealand Syrah. The layered blue and black fruit nose had ample appeal.
The palate showed some signs that the wine was aging as graceful as Lauren becall.
Bright violet aromatics, cedar, white pepper,
Sweet plum fruit wrapped in cherry and cedar oak splashed with pepper
Great texture and balance.
92 points

2005
A classic vintage displaying classic New Zealand syrah characters. Very delicate finely ground white pepper, with sandlewood and cedar the backdrop to generous blackcurrant and blackberry fruit, with a hint of raspberry.
The palate displayed seductive primary fruit followed by some earthy and mineral stony characters.
93 points

2004
Classic deep, dark, rich fruit with tar overtones and almost a rich mocca making an appearance on the nose.
The palate weight was sublime maybe a bit too rich to drink by itself and later match a lamb dish sublimely. The tar and chocolate dark black fruit coat the palate but the use of oak is restrained and the wine is very balanced.
90 points

2002
This was only the second vintage of Le Sol and despite young vine age this wine has matured very well. There were some signs of tiredness but in context this may have been the heat. Also a contributing factor may have been the alcohol, at 15.4% showing up with the heat. The wine was very well balanced and left no feeling of high alcohol. The palate weight was good and very much alive.
89 Points

2001
The inaugural vintage of this classic wine. This wine gave a very strong indication that 'Le Sol' is meant to age and is very serious. Although the grapes were off very young vines, there was still plenty of fruit evident and the wine was complete. This wine suffered most from the heat but gave a clear indication of the direction in which Craggy Range is headed with Syrah.
88 Points

Wine tasting in humid environments are challenging , but this was overcome by using a Kava bowl and some ice just to chill the bottom of the bottles and not submerge them. Although the temperature was high all wines showed very well and the heat played a minor part in the scoring of these wines.
It became very obvious that Syrah and Bordeaux blended wines are extremely well suited to be grown on the Gimblett Gravels, Hawke's Bay.

Vertical of Nautilus Sauvignon Blanc

2002 Nautilius Sauvignon blanc
Tin processed peas, cut grass, baking soda, clean dry mineral laden palate, lemon twist of lime. This wine really showed that Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc does have some aging potential. Easily the most exciting wine of the line up. The wine had seductive charm!
