Omaka Springs Estate 'Falveys' Chardonnay 2008

This label has always troubled me, I just don't like it but that's personal! The wine however is of ver good quality for the price. It normally retails for under $25. The colour is pale straw, the nose is quite focused with lemon zest and other citrus fruit to the fore. Things get interesting on the palate, there is a sense of minerality which is usually reserved for wines much more expensive than this. The citrus character is guided on to the palate which linear precision. All in all, a good wine.

Stonyridge Larose 2004, Waiheke Island

From the pioneer of Waiheke wines this 2004 vintage is drinking beautifully now or will age for the next 5 years or so. The nose on this wine is very European in character. It's not just your typical new world Bordeaux blend but has great expression from dark fruit to something a little more interesting. The layered nose is an indication that this is a serious wine, the mineral, fruit, earth aromas lead from nose to palate perfectly. This wine is the archetypal Bordeaux blend from NZ.

Although these wines are said to age 20 years I would have to say with the approachable nature of this wine it'll last for the next 5+.

Gibbston Valley Pinot Blanc 2008

One could be forgiven thinking this wine was red, if they were blindfolded! Pinot Blanc is a mutation from the genetically unstable varietal Pinot Noir. The structure is not to dissimilar and the flavour more Burgundian than either Pinot Gris or Sauvignon Blanc.
The wine has racy acid and beautifully balanced fruit over minerals and savoury.

Willy Gisselbrecht 'Tradition' Pinot Gris, Alsace.

Beautiful white peach, Nashi pear and apricots are the most prominent characters on the nose. The palate weight is what most new world Pinot Gris' strive to obtain, full fruit but with overall balance that make this wine a must buy.

Pyramid Valley 2007 Lebecca Vineyard

A highlight of a recent Riesling tasting. Pitted against some of New Zealand's most awarded wines this wine shone. Beautifully elegant aromatics, perfect balance on the palate with great varietal expression and purity of fruit.

Dry River Riesling 2009, Martinborough

A very delicate aroma of white chalk, minerally citrus, and white flowers are on the nose. Light citrus, riverstone, and some good austerity balance this wine, was far too young but showed promise.

Pegasus Bay 'Bel Canto' Riesling 2008, Waipara

Fresh fragrant aromatics really spill from the glass, hints of Citrus, Lime, and some chalkiness. The palate has some very good varietal definition, with plenty of citrus but the acidity and minerality are very well balanced with the quality of the fruit.

Often over looked but beautiful as an aperitif or sweet dessert wine. this wine is fortified at 15.5% Alcohol but in balance. Sweet apricot, almond, and citrus with a hint of cinnamon on the nose.
Delicate on the palate with good weight and very well balanced with a little heat at the end.

Churton Sauvignon Blanc 2007, Marlborough, New Zealand

The perception that Sauvignon Blanc is not meant to age is dismissed by this wine. The sheer aromatics and delicate citrus palate lure you into discovering that there are some New Zealand winemakers making age worthy wine.
