Saint Clair Sauvignon Blanc 2010, Marlborough

From one of the most respected Marlborough wineries comes this latest vintage of Sauvignon Blanc. Saint Clair focus on Sauvignon Blanc more than any other wineries in the country and this wine helps one to understand what Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc is all about.

The passion fruit mixed with freshly cut pineapple are the indicators that this wine is typical Marlborough. The fruit is in abundance and a tropical fruit salad and good linear nature allow this wine to express the essence of Marlborough.

Blind River 2008 Pinot Noir, Marlborough

Good plum colour and bright red ruit that jumps fro the glass and assaults the olfactory system. The nose is of sweet red fruit with typical Marlborough earthy delight. The palate runs smooth with raspberry and cheery preserve wrestling some savoury characters that with a dry zingy edge.

Matua Road Sauvignon Blanc 2009

From one of the large wineries in west Auckland this Sauvignon Blanc is from Marlborough. The grapes are transported and made into wine at the West Auckland winery.

The colour is very light yellow but the nose gives very good aromatics. The aromatics are of freshly cut hay, sweet tinned peas and some spice whilst the palate is off dry with good fruit concentration. This wine would make a great accompaniment to white fish from the BBQ.

Forrest Estate 'The Doctors' Riesling 2010

New Zealand's best selling Riesling by a country mile has a new vintage release. The 2010 Riesling just released still needs time to settle, full of youth and vibrance with great sweet fruit and racy acid.
This Riesling never fails but to impress! Those of you scared of the varietal should give New Zealand Riesling a try once more.

Wine Review: Nga Waka Sauvignon Blanc 1999, Martinborough

Say what you want about aged New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, this wine goes the distance!

Many believe that NZ Sauvignon Blanc must be drunk within the first couple of years, but Sauvignon Blanc from quality producers can easily last 10 years on careful cellaring.

The Nga Waka Sauvignon Blanc 1999 from Martinborough is one of these wines. The wine has obviously changed from release but has all the fruit still present with a beautifully balanced acid structure.

Hints of marmalade, honey, and other tropical delights fill the air and translate well on the palate. The texture is reminiscent of Sancerre and the balance would make Libra proud.

Go get yourself some aged Sauvignon, even if from only 2007!

Mondillo Pinot Noir 2009

The 2008 wine won the Royal Easter Show champion wine of the show. This years wine displays everything that I feel is bad about Central Otago Pinot Noir. There is an abundance of over ripe sweet fruit that hides the true expression of the grape. A dollop of oak and over extraction make this a very disappointing Pinot Noir. It lacks typicity of the Pinot grape, lacks femininity and poise, structure and texture.

Murdoch James 'Salesyards' Syrah 2008

A very feminine nose of violets, clove, white pepper, and plums and red fruit. Not a Syrah for those of you that love big Australian Shiraz but more for those that love elegance and seductive wines. This wine has a purity of fruit that is focused and laced with a great backbone that'll keep it going for the next 6-10 years.

Omaka Springs Estate 'Falveys' Chardonnay 2008

4

This label has always troubled me, I just don't like it but that's personal! The wine however is of ver good quality for the price. It normally retails for under $25. The colour is pale straw, the nose is quite focused with lemon zest and other citrus fruit to the fore. Things get interesting on the palate, there is a sense of minerality which is usually reserved for wines much more expensive than this. The citrus character is guided on to the palate which linear precision. All in all, a good wine.
